Understanding the Soils of Rajasthan (राजस्थान की मृदा)

Soil is a vital natural resource formed by the combination of solid, liquid, and gaseous materials through the interaction of rocks, climate, vegetation, and micro-organisms. The scientific study of soil is known as Pedology. Rajasthan's diverse geography means it has highly varied soil profiles, ranging from fertile alluvial plains to shifting sand dunes. Preparing this topic thoroughly is highly beneficial for competitive exams like RPSC, RSMSSB, REET, and CET.

Major Soil Problems in Rajasthan

  • Soil Erosion (मृदा अपरदन): Wind erosion is highly prevalent in western desert regions, while water sheet erosion affects areas like Sirohi and Rajsamand. Gully erosion is prominent in the Chambal river basin (badland topography).
  • Salinity and Alkalinity (लवणीयता व क्षारीयता): Caused by excessive irrigation and capillary action, leaving a white crust ('Reh' or 'Kallar') on the topsoil. It is treated using Gypsum, Rock Phosphate, and green manure.
  • Waterlogging (सेम की समस्या): Heavily prevalent in the canal-irrigated belt of Hanumangarh (Badopal) and Sriganganagar. Planting Eucalyptus trees and deploying drip irrigation systems help mitigate this issue.
  • Soil Degradation (मृदा अवकर्षण): The loss of physical, chemical, and organic capacities of soil due to unscientific farming practices.

Soil Health Card Scheme (मृदा स्वास्थ्य कार्ड योजना)

To address the deteriorating health of soil across India, the Soil Health Card Scheme was launched on February 14, 2015, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Suratgarh in Sriganganagar, Rajasthan. Running with the slogan 'Swasth Dhara, Khet Hara', the program features a financial sharing ratio of 75:25 between the Central and State governments. It helps farmers identify nutrient deficiencies in their fields so they can apply fertilizers and corrective chemicals efficiently.
